I-395 Underdeck Open Space

Overview
The I-395 Underdeck will be a 33-acre public open space that will completely transform a lifeless infrastructure corridor into a significant landscape and actively programmed destination for residents, workers, and visitors. Located beneath the new Signature Bridge (currently being built) and situated north of Downtown Miami, the project is within or adjacent to multiple established and merging neighborhoods: Overtown, Omni, Downtown, and the Innovation District. The new Signature bridge highway span will be 40-50 feet higher than the current I-395 bridge. There will also be a reduction in columns from 800 to 200. Combined, they will create more light and open space for the open space project, which is being built by FDOT and the design-build joint venture.

Master Plan Goals
4.0 Create Great Streets and Community Spaces

4.3 Enhance Connectivity to Neighborhoods Surrounding Downtown
4.5 Connect and Promote Downtown Parks, Open Space and Greenways

Status
By March 2020, the City’s design team – WSP, Hargreaves Jones, HR&A, and Touzet Studio – had completed significant stakeholder input and design development. Currently, a decision/agreement needs to be made as to final design, costs, construction schedule, maintenance, activation and governance.

1-Year Outlook: FDOT and City need to agree to design, budget, maintenance, operations and annual costs.
2-Year Outlook: Finalized design documents, permitting and naming of open space. Agreements need to be in place as to maintenance and programming.
3-Year Outlook: Begin construction. Project could be completed in year 4 or 5.
