Downtown Dog Spot
Overview
Approximately 39% of households in Downtown Miami own pets, with 60% of those owning dogs. However, dog parks in this area have long been scarce, leading to messy sidewalks. Enter Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins. Commissioner Higgins, in collaboration with County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces (PROS) and Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) departments, and the Miami DDA proudly announced the opening of the Downtown Dog Spot on September 12, 2024, creatively transforming an underutilized space into a vibrant, pet-friendly community amenity.
Located beneath the First Metromover Station at 217 NE 2nd Street, the Downtown Dog Spot reimagines public infrastructure by converting a previously inactive area into a safe, engaging urban park for dogs and their owners. This accessible, free-to-use facility provides shaded seating, water fountains, and agility equipment, creating an inclusive environment supporting canine activity and community interaction.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to transform underutilized spaces along the Metromover corridor into active, community-focused areas that enhance daily life in Downtown Miami. By integrating green infrastructure and thoughtful urban design, the Downtown Dog Spot advances the Miami DDA's mission to create a more livable, connected, and vibrant urban core.
