The Underline

Overview
The Underline is transforming the land below Miami’s Metrorail into a world-class, 120-acre linear park, urban trail and public art destination. The full project will span 10-miles that will transform regional mobility and celebrate diversity, culture and lifelong learning. Through innovative urban trails and creative programming, the Underline is connecting people to their environment and each other to create a safe, healthy, equitable and sustainable community. The Underline project is a collaboration between the Meg Daly-led 501C3 non-profit organization Friends of the Underline and Miami-Dade County of Department of Transportation & Public Works (DTPW), with additional funding from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the State of Florida, the City of Miami, and the Miami DDA.

Status
- Phase 1, the ½ mile section from the Miami River to SW 13th St, was completed and opened in February 2021. The first phase is named the "Brickell Backyard."
- Phase 2, from SW 13th St to SW 19th Avenue, is a 2.14-mile segment and is named the "Hammock Trail." Construction began in Fall 2021 and was completed in April of 2024.
- Phase 3 of the Underline is a 7.36-mile segment that connects SW 19th Ave to its southern terminus at the Dadeland South Metrorail station Kiss and Ride Facility. Phase 3 is expected to be completed in 2026.
- The Miami DDA increased its boundaries to include the Underline in 2019, allocated 1 Ambassador (7 days a week) to patrol the area/participate in events, 1 DET team member (5 days a week) to assist with maintenance, and provided 1 Pit-Stop public bathroom that will be maintained full-time.
- 2-Year Outlook: Phase 3 is expected to be completed in 2026. Once all three phases are completed, The Underline will be Miami-Dade County's first true mobility corridor uniting all modes of transportation and enhancing accessibility to eight Metrorail stations within its path and the neighboring communities.
