Biscayne Green Grand Pedestrian Promenade
Biscayne Green is a long term transformational vision to redesign and repurpose Biscayne Boulevard into a pedestrian promenade, enhancing pedestrian safety and connectivity in Downtown. The intent of this vision is to repurpose the corridor to meet the transportation needs of all street users in a safe and comfortable manner. http://www.miamidda.com/biscayne_green.asp

With additional analysis necessary to support the proposed vision, the Miami DDA and City of Miami applied for a Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Transportation Alternatives Grant – 2016 Cycle - to advance a Lane Elimination Analysis, hoping this application helps the City of Miami take the necessary step to keep this project moving forward.

As part of the 2015 Knight Foundation's Knight Cities Challenge, the Miami DDA's proposal for Biscayne Green – A demonstration project showcasing a reimagined Biscayne Boulevard, was selected as a winning project among 4,500 ideas submitted and 158 finalists nationwide. The winning projects were announced on 04/12/2016.This temporary installation would be the first attempt to showcase possible improvements to this roadway through measures that increase multi-modal safety and connectivity by utilizing a complete streets and context-sensitive approach. Showcasing the potential of a re-imagined Biscayne Boulevard will help build the necessary support for the long term vision.

SE/SW 1 Street - Complete Streets Initiative
The Miami DDA partnered with Miami Dade County and City of Miami to advance a Complete Streets concept and implementation plan for SE/SW 1st street between Biscayne boulevard and SW 2nd Avenue in response to the 2015 U.S. Department of Transportation’s Mayor’s Challenge for Safer People and Safer Streets. A design workshop was hosted the first week of April 2016 where all key stakeholders were engaged and given the opportunity to provide input through this process.

The plans address pedestrian safety and connectivity through context sensitive design. The team is coordinating with Miami Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works towards the implementation of a pilot project. The outcomes of this project are intended to increase safety, prioritize pedestrians and transit, and achieve driving behavior that is more in-line with its context. The short-term measures recommended as part of this plan are expected to be implemented in 2016.

Downtown Baywalk
The Miami DDA is taking steps to move the Downtown Baywalk project forward. The process includes engaging our partners, a preliminary site analysis for identification of constrained parcels, and the development of a strategy to get a design strategy started. The objective is to create a vision for Baywalk through a collaborative process which results in a strategy for phased improvements. As it exists today, Baywalk is fragmented, difficult to navigate and lacks consistent design elements. DDA staff has been developing an existing conditions assessment to further understand the challenges and take the proper steps to expand the 1.8 miles of continuous Baywalk currently available.

Brickell Avenue Bridge / Miami River
The Brickell Avenue Bridge has been a topic of concern for quite some time to the DDA Board of Directors. Various background data collection efforts and analysis have been completed to date, and it has been determined that the current rules and regulations governing the Brickell Bridge openings on the Miami River are not being enforced per state requirements. The DDA Board adopted resolution 22/2016 in July 15, 2016 requesting the Florida Department of Transportation and US Coast Guard to enforce the current Federal Register rules, and support the Florida Department of Transportation request for a permanent deviation of the current operating schedule and complete various operational/infrastructure improvements on the Brickell Bridge. The Miami DDA continues the dialogue with its partner agencies to develop solutions to address the bridge openings and to achieve a balance of the interests of all agencies.
